Handheld Notes is an independent publication for people who play games on pocket-sized hardware — Linux retro handhelds, Android pocket consoles, and the accessories that make them nicer to live with.
The site is written in English for a global audience. You do not need to follow a single brand, firmware, or Discord to use these notes. We assume you want clear trade-offs, not a shopping countdown.
What we cover
Articles are tagged so you can skim by job-to-be-done:
- Reviews — how a device actually plays, with caveats
- Firmware & Emulation — frontends, custom firmware concepts, and setup hygiene
- Accessories — grips, sticks, screens, storage, and docks

Anbernic appears often because many readers start there. It is still one manufacturer among many. Retroid, Ayn, Miyoo, Powkiddy, AYANEO, Valve, and others sit in the same conversation when the hardware warrants it.
How we write
Tone is practical and specific. We prefer “this d-pad is accurate for fighting games, but the triggers are mushy” over launch-day superlatives. Sample posts on this site are editorial examples of that voice.
We do not publish ROM download links, and we do not walk through device exploits. Firmware pieces explain what community software does and when it is worth considering — not how to bypass a vendor’s protections.

Handheld Notes is not an official store, warranty desk, or fan club. Product names are used to identify hardware people already search for. If a piece is sponsored or a unit is loaned, that will be stated in the article.
